About the AAM AAM began in 1999 in western North Carolina as a pilot program sponsored by the Library of Congress and made possible through the efforts of Congressman Charles Taylor and the Education Research Consortium. With a mission to train in-service and pre-service K-12 educators to access, use and produce curriculum utilizing technology, the Internet and the digitized primary source materials from the collections of the Library of Congress, Phase I of the AAM program worked with over 600 teachers in western NC and upstate SC. During the fall of 2003 the AAM program began its transition into Phase II, in which the training moved from classroom-style training to on-site workshops. Phase II was delivered through a series of free staff development workshops that are taught on-site using the school's own equipment and internet connection. During the Summer of 2006 the AAM program transitioned to PROPEL. PROPEL (Primary Resources Opening Portals to Enhance Learning) is professional development providing the opportunity for school librarians and media specialists to become AAM-certified Primary Source Specialists. The new 30 hour PROPEL series is avaliable exclusively to all WNC school librarians, media specialists, and media coordinators.
