Title: Famous African Americans in United States History

Grade Level(s): 4th – 5th Grade

Description:

This activity begins with a PowerPoint presentation on Martin Luther King, Jr. including a section on Rosa Parks. The two display boards with pictures of five different famous African Americans will be on display in the media center. The five different African Americans on these boards are Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and Jackie Robinson. All the pictures are grouped by color background sheets so students can easily identify the pictures belonging to the five different groups.

The students will watch another PowerPoint presentation about the remaining three persons and information about their lives. After the lessons on these famous African Americans the students will have one class with activity boxes where the students will work in five groups. Each group will examine the photographs in his/her boxes and identify what each picture is about and who the box is about. Each group will share the pictures found in his/her box and tell the class who the box is about.

Each fifth grade class will be given a worksheet that has pictures of each famous African American studied. On this worksheet the student will identify who the person is and what made him/her famous.
