Title: National Parks and Monuments: Protecting the Past, Present, and Future

Grade Level(s): High School Biology (Can be adapted to other courses such as Earth and Environmental Science)

Description:

Students will choose a National Park to research and discover the history of the park, the role of government in conservation efforts and identify a plant, animal species, and geological that is unique to the park.

Students will design a yearly calendar featuring the National Park.

Students must include the following in their calendar:

  • History of the park
  •  An overview of its programs/goals.
  • 1 animal unique to that park’s region – description, classification
  • 1 plant unique to that park’s region – description, classification
  • 1 unique geological feature-description
  • 12 pictures representing the park. One must be an animal, one the plant and one must be the geological feature. The nine other pictures must directly relate to the park, but the student can choose the image. At least one picture must be from the Library of Congress. Pictures are to be the main picture for the month.
  • 10 Important dates/anniversaries relative to the park’s history and operation need to be designated on the proper day of the year.
  • All images and sources consulted must be properly cited inside the back cover.
