Creator: Cindy Sturdivant

School: Owen Middle School

Title: Freedom Bound

Grade Level(s): 8th grade

Description:

This exhibit is designed to be used in a display manner in connection with a unit on Runaway Slaves and the Underground Railroad.  The original intent of the exhibit is to use the display in a bulletin board fashion and reference the items during the unit.

In an attempt to make the exhibit more versatile, a card of suggested activities is mounted on the back of the exhibit.  Possible activities include:

§        Students keep a journal as if they were traveling on the Underground Railroad.

§        Students write a historical fiction entry about a life as a slave.

§        Students choose a town/city in the North and South and research how African Americans were treated in those areas prior to the Civil War.

§        Students design a quilt which could have been used as a signal on the Underground Railroad.

§         Students research how their hometown was affected by slavery and the Underground Railroad.
