Title:
Lost Colony: Documents and Drama
Grade Level(s): 8th Grade Social Studies
Description:
A. DRAMA ACTIVITY (graveyard speakers):
The class will create their own dramatization of the
Lost Colony by introducing their characters (from
a suggested list) and explaining their importance
in history through an oral presentation without notes
(in the style of “Spoon River Anthology”
where characters talk from the grave).
Students will fill out a 'who" "what"
"where" "when" "why"
"how" fact sheet as they do research on
their character (to turn in).
They will speak as if they were their character for
2 minutes (without using notes except a “sticky”
note attached to the back of their tombstone) and
using a related prop. They will use “I”
throughout the presentation.
Search for details about one of the following persons:
Sir Walter Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth I, Philip Amadas,
Arthur Barlowe, Simon Fernando, Sir Richard Greenville,
Manteo, Wanchese, Governor Ralph Lane, Eleanor and
Ananias Dare, John White, Theodor De Bry, Thomas Heriot,
Virginia Dare, Paul Green, President Franklin D. Roosevelt,
etc.
NOTE: All these people were directly or indirectly
connected to the Lost Colony.
B. ONLY SURVIVING DOCUMENTS ACTIVITY:
(Picture comparisons of John White and Theodor De
Bry)
Go to this site: http://virtualjamestown.org/images/white_debry_html/jamestown.html
Examine the two styles of illustrations that survive
from the Roanoke Colony- White’s original watercolors
and the engravings that De Bry made from White’s
paintings. Notice the changes in style. View critically
and determine the differences.
C. “WHO WOULD BE A GOOD COLONIST?” ACTIVITY:
Examine the following web sites and examine the colonist
list. Brainstorm the characteristics that make a good
colonist.
Examine a colonist description sheet and decide which
people would be good choices.
SETTLERS: WHY THEY WERE CHOSEN:
