Title: Made You Look!

Grade Level(s): 7th Grade Advertising Unit for Language Arts/Social Studies

Description:
This lesson will be done in conjunction with a classroom unit on propaganda. It will include analyzing various primary source advertisements and making judgments about selling techniques. It will expand upon the advertising theme by incorporating prior knowledge and acquiring new knowledge of the importance of inventions through the years.

Activity 1: Students will select a picture of their choice to analyze. They will fill out a photographic analysis form and a KWL chart.

Activity 2: They will gather in groups according to the category of their picture, i.e. transportation, clothing, personal products, services, military, etc. They will justify the criteria for belonging to the group.

Activity 3: On the back of their chosen picture will be a colored dot. Students will regroup according to the color. Using clues from the pictures, as well as available resources in print and online, students will determine a general timeframe. When finished, students will place their pictures on a timeline. The group will analyze the timeline to determine any inconsistencies before the correct order is provided.

Activity 4: Students will match slogans to products.

Activity 5: Given a choice of quotations on the subject of advertising, students will choose one, explain it, and give an example.

Activity 6: Students will listen to commercials and look at ads of various ages. They will fill out a worksheet on same/difference.

Activity 7: Students will select a product to introduce to the world, plan, write, practice, tape or videotape, and present their final advertisement to the class.
