Title: What's in Abe Lincoln's Hat: A Study of the American Civil War

Grade Level(s): 5th Grade

Description:

The idea for this activity is from Martha Brenner's Book Abe Lincoln's Hat which explains that Lincoln used to keep important documents in his stovepipe hat. Students first will read the book Abe Lincoln's Hat and then given they will receive the following information:

As a young lawyer, Abe Lincoln found that his stovepipe hat came in handy for more than just covering his head. It also served as a good place to keep important papers. Imagine that you find Abraham Lincoln’s stovepipe hat and inside it are important documents from America ’s past.  These are some of the most precious documents, photos, and maps concerning Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. On the back of each document is a color dot. Documents that have the same color dot go into the same hat. For example documents with red dots on the back of them all go into one hat. There is also a number written on each color dot. This number coincides with the activity for that particular document.  For each document, read the question.  Then search for the answer by “control clicking” on the provided link.  You may also need to analyze the printed copies of the documents to get your answers. Write the answers you discover on the provided activity sheet for each hat.

You will be investigating six topics of the American Civil War. Abe Lincoln’s stovepipe hat contains important documents, maps, and photos on each subject.
