Title: Calder and His World

Grade Level(s): High School Art

Description:
The Art teacher and I had recently worked on an expedition with her students which related the spontaneity of Alexander Calder’s art to the spontaneity of the jazz music form. We decided to collaborate further on the study of the many varied forms of Calder’s art. Choosing 6 of his different forms and adding the topic of the strong artistic influences in his life, we decided on 7 different topics.

In this activity, the students are to examine the display board, then as individuals or teams they will choose 1 of the 7 Art Form Bags and decide which art form is represented by the contents of the bag. The laptop is set up with interactive games, tours, and interesting trivia about Calder’s work. Again, the students would be able to explore these individually or with team members.
