Title: WWII Women Wore Many Hats

Grade Level(s): 5th Grade United States History

Description:
1. Students will begin by choosing a photograph

2. They will each study their images closely and answer the 5 “W’s”
• Who do you think the photo is of? Who do you think the person/s is?
• What do you think is happening? What do you think this person/s is doing? What does this photo tell you about the time period?
• When do you think this photograph was taken? (Time period)
• Where do you think it was taken? (City, Country, Farm)
• Why do you think this photograph was taken? Why is it important?

3. Using their answers from the above questions they will create a story about their photographs.

4. They will then share their stories with the class

Notations:
• This activity can be done individually, with a partner or in a small group
• Students can pretend they are the person (or one of the people) in the photograph and tell what is happening to “them” that day in the form of a journal entry
• Students can pretend to be the newspaper reporter who took the photograph and write a newspaper article about the experience
• Students can create a story using all of the photographs
